Carpet Cleaning Methods Compared: Steam, Dry and Shampoo

Steam extraction, dry compound and shampoo cleaning each suit different carpets and situations. Here is how the three compare, with the climate in Johor Bahru in mind.

The right carpet method depends on the fibre, the soil level and how fast the carpet must dry.

Not all carpet cleaning is the same. The three common methods, steam extraction, dry compound and shampoo, each suit different carpets, soil levels and situations. Choosing the wrong one can leave a carpet either under-cleaned or too wet to dry properly, which matters in a humid climate.

This guide compares the three, with drying time given particular weight, since that is the factor most affected by Johor Bahru's humidity.

In this guide

Steam Extraction (Hot Water Extraction)

The most thorough method for deep soil. Hot water and a cleaning solution are injected into the carpet and immediately extracted, pulling embedded dirt and allergen out with the moisture. It is the method of choice for carpets that have not been cleaned in a while or that hold allergen. The trade-off is drying time. A steam-cleaned carpet is left damp, and in humid air it needs good airflow or air-conditioning to dry fully. Done well, with strong extraction, the carpet should be left damp rather than wet.

Dry Compound Cleaning

A cleaning compound is worked into the carpet and then vacuumed out, carrying soil with it. Very little moisture is involved, so the carpet is usable almost immediately. This makes it well suited to offices that cannot close for drying, and to humid conditions where long drying times are a problem. It is excellent for maintenance cleaning, though for very heavily soiled carpet it does not reach as deep as steam extraction.

Shampoo Cleaning

An older method where a foaming shampoo is worked into the carpet and then vacuumed once dry. It can lift surface appearance well, but it tends to leave more residue than the other two methods, and residue attracts soil faster afterwards. It also involves moisture and a drying period. It still has a place for certain heavily soiled commercial carpets, but for most homes the other two methods are preferred.

Choosing for a Johor Bahru Home or Office

The decision comes down to three questions. How soiled is the carpet? How fast does it need to be back in use? And how well can the space dry? For a deeply soiled home carpet with time to dry, steam extraction is usually best. For an office or a humid room that cannot afford long drying, a dry compound method is safer. The fibre type also matters, so the carpet should be checked before a method is chosen.
